Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner
Expert witness and legal nurse consultant
About Me
My name is Kelly Layland and I live in Rochester, NY. I have been in the nursing field since 1991. I always knew I wanted to be a nurse; however, I never knew the different directions it would take me. I have worked as a cardiac nurse, medical/surgical, OBGYN, PACU and as a SANE Nurse in multiple hospitals. I decided to make this website because I have seen firsthand how the lack of knowledge regarding medical issues in criminal cases can truly affect the outcome of the case. I took a class at The University of Rochester called Legal Nurse Consultant. After the class was completed, every student had to do an internship at an attorney’s office. I was lucky enough to be placed at the Public Defender’s office. I spent 6 months assisting attorneys on a variety of cases, it was there that I realized not everyone is guilty. I worked on several cases where the accused was found not guilty. In several of these cases it came down to educating attorneys on medical records and helping them understand the impact these records can have on the outcome of a case. In order to truly dissect and confidently utilize these records you need to be medically trained which most attorneys are not. Medical records can be very confusing and difficult to interpret for an individual who is not trained in navigating through them. Having someone medically trained on a case to help an attorney be more precise and impactful can change an outcome of a case. A large portion of my work has dealt with sexual assault cases. I have testified in multiple states as an “expert witness”. Working on SANE cases with attorneys allows me to bring my scientific background in sexual assaults from my years of education, along with my experience and knowledge working as a SANE nurse for 18 years, together to help attorneys get the best outcome for each case. Every attorney I have worked with on SANE cases has stated that after working with me, they will not work another SANE case without a SANE/legal nurse consultant. When asked “Who do you work for the defense or the prosecution?” My response is always the same, “neither, I bring the scientific facts based on my many years as a Registered Nurse/SANE Nurse.”
